Romy and Michele Are Back: D23 Reveals a First Look at the Long-Awaited Sequel
Nearly three decades after Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion became a cult comedy favorite, Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are officially back together as the unforgettable duo.

The actresses appeared on the D23 stage to promote the upcoming sequel, giving fans their first major glimpse at the project since production began. The reunion instantly brought back the colorful fashion, playful energy and unmistakable friendship that made Romy and Michele pop-culture icons.
And yes — the iconic duo still knows how to make an entrance.
Romy and Michele Are Finally Getting Their Second Chapter
The original Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion arrived in 1997, following best friends Romy White and Michele Weinberger as they prepared for their high-school reunion.
Their solution to impressing former classmates? Inventing wildly successful careers.
What began as a ridiculous attempt to prove themselves eventually became a surprisingly heartfelt story about friendship, confidence and learning to be comfortable with who you really are.
Now, almost 30 years later, the sequel is bringing the characters into a completely different stage of their lives.
Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are reprising their respective roles, with the new story finding Romy and Michele still together and running a successful fashion boutique in Beverly Hills. However, their lives apparently take an unexpected turn when a wedding makes them realize that their romantic lives may not be quite as successful as their careers.
The Fashion Is Coming Back Too
One of the most recognizable elements of the original movie was its unapologetically colorful fashion.
At D23, Kudrow and Sorvino appeared together in looks that immediately felt like a modern extension of Romy and Michele’s signature style.
The sequel is also bringing back costume designer Mona May, who helped create the visual identity of the original film. That should make the new movie feel familiar without simply copying the wardrobe from 1997.
For fans who remember the matching pastel outfits, oversized accessories and deliberately extravagant styling, that may be just as exciting as the story itself.
A New Romantic Chapter
The sequel isn’t simply going to recreate the high-school reunion formula.
Instead, Romy and Michele have apparently reached a point where they have achieved professional success but begin questioning what is missing from their personal lives.
And that means romance.
According to details revealed around the D23 presentation, Michele will have a new love interest played by Keegan-Michael Key, while Rob Huebel will play Romy’s new romantic partner. The movie will also feature several returning members of the original cast.
The story therefore has the opportunity to explore what adulthood looks like for two women who have remained best friends for decades.
Plenty of Familiar Faces Are Returning
Kudrow and Sorvino aren’t the only original stars coming back.
The sequel is also set to feature Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim and Julia Campbell, giving the new movie an even stronger connection to the 1997 original.
At the same time, the sequel is expanding its cast with names including Wendi McLendon-Covey, Patrick Warburton and Breckin Meyer, alongside Keegan-Michael Key and Rob Huebel.
That combination of returning characters and new faces could allow the film to revisit the world of the original without making it feel like nothing has changed.
And Yes, There Will Be Dancing
Fans of the original have another reason to be excited.
Kudrow and Sorvino have teased a new dance sequence for the sequel, echoing the unforgettable dance performance that became one of the most recognizable moments from the first movie.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the sequel will attempt to recreate the original beat-for-beat.
Instead, it gives the filmmakers an opportunity to create another ridiculous, joyful Romy-and-Michele moment that could become a new fan favorite.
Tim Federle Is Taking the Director’s Chair
The sequel is being directed by Tim Federle, while original writer Robin Schiff is returning to write the screenplay.
Schiff’s involvement is particularly significant because she created Romy and Michele and wrote the screenplay for the original film.
Kudrow and Sorvino are also involved as executive producers, giving the original stars a greater creative role in bringing their characters back.
Production officially began in 2026, with 20th Century Studios announcing the start of filming in June.
Hulu Is Where the Reunion Will Happen
Unlike the original movie, the sequel isn’t currently planned as a theatrical release.
The new Romy and Michele movie is being produced as a Hulu Original, with the film also expected to be available through Disney+ internationally. In India, reports indicate that the movie will be available through JioHotstar.
No official release date has been announced yet.
Why This Reunion Matters
There are plenty of legacy sequels in Hollywood, but Romy and Michele occupies a slightly different place in pop culture.
The original wasn’t built around an enormous franchise or blockbuster mythology. It became beloved because of its characters.
Romy and Michele were funny, strange, fashionable and completely themselves. Their friendship was ultimately more important than the fake careers they invented or the people they wanted to impress.
That’s why bringing them back after almost 30 years carries genuine emotional weight.
The sequel doesn’t need to prove that Romy and Michele are still cool.
It simply needs to remind audiences why they loved them in the first place.
And judging by their D23 reunion, the chemistry is still there.
Geeksterr Verdict
The biggest question surrounding Romy and Michele 2 isn’t whether audiences remember the original.
They clearly do.
The real question is whether the sequel can capture the heart and ridiculousness of the 1997 classic while allowing Romy and Michele to grow up with their audience.
With Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino back, Robin Schiff writing, several original cast members returning and Mona May once again working on the costumes, the foundations are certainly promising.
For now, the Post-its can stay on the desk.
Romy and Michele are officially getting another reunion — and this time, they’re bringing their adult lives with them.
