Ice Age: Boiling Point Turns Up the Heat With New Footage at D23

The Ice Age gang is heading somewhere they’ve never been before — and this time, the cold is the least of their problems.

Disney has given fans another look at Ice Age: Boiling Point during D23, showcasing fresh footage from the next big-screen adventure. The upcoming film sends Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, Scrat and the rest of the herd into a dangerous underground world filled with lava, volcanoes and dinosaurs.

The new adventure is set to hit theaters on February 5, 2027, marking the franchise’s return to cinemas after more than a decade.

The Ice Age World Is About to Get Much Hotter

For most of the franchise, Manny and his friends have dealt with freezing temperatures, melting ice and the occasional continental disaster.

Boiling Point flips that formula.

The story takes the characters beneath the familiar frozen landscape and into the mysterious Lost World, a dangerous environment where volcanic activity and prehistoric creatures create a completely different kind of threat.

Disney describes the movie as a dinosaur-and-lava-filled adventure that takes the herd into previously unexplored areas of the Lost World.

That change in setting could give the sixth theatrical Ice Age movie a noticeably different feel from its predecessors.

Scrat Has a New Problem — Baby Scrat

Of course, no Ice Age adventure would feel complete without Scrat and his never-ending obsession with acorns.

But this time, Scrat isn’t alone.

Baby Scrat joins the story, creating a new dynamic for the franchise’s most chaotic character. The character was previously introduced in Ice Age: Scrat Tales, but Boiling Point marks Baby Scrat’s feature-film debut.

The new footage reportedly shows Scrat and his little companion caught up in the chaos of the volcanic Lost World.

And if Scrat’s history is anything to go by, adding another squirrel to the equation probably won’t make his acorn-related problems any easier.

Manny, Sid and Diego Are Back

The heart of Ice Age remains its original herd.

Ray Romano returns as Manny, John Leguizamo is back as Sid, Denis Leary reprises Diego, Queen Latifah returns as Ellie and Simon Pegg once again voices Buck.

Their return is especially significant because Boiling Point is the first theatrical Ice Age film since 2016’s Ice Age: Collision Course.

The franchise did continue with The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild in 2022 and the Disney+ short series Ice Age: Scrat Tales, but the new movie represents a return to the big-screen format that originally made the series a global phenomenon.

A Lost World Filled With Dinosaurs

The new setting isn’t just about avoiding lava.

The Lost World is also home to giant prehistoric creatures, bringing the franchise back to one of its most popular concepts: dinosaurs.

The combination of dinosaurs and volcanic activity creates plenty of possibilities for the herd. Manny and his friends will have to navigate an environment where almost everything around them can become a potential threat.

For Buck, however, this might actually be the perfect vacation.

The dinosaur-loving weasel has always been at his best when surrounded by danger, and the Lost World appears to give him an enormous playground.

The Herd’s Biggest Adventure Yet?

One of the most interesting aspects of Boiling Point is its scale.

Instead of simply moving the characters to another snowy location, the filmmakers are introducing an entirely new ecosystem beneath the world audiences already know.

The official material teases lava-filled landscapes, dinosaurs and unexplored territory, suggesting that the movie could push the franchise toward a more action-heavy adventure while retaining the comedy that has defined Ice Age since 2002.

And with Scrat and Baby Scrat adding their own brand of chaos, the movie doesn’t appear to be taking itself too seriously.

The Return Comes 25 Years After the Original

The timing of Boiling Point is also interesting.

The original Ice Age arrived in 2002, making the upcoming film part of the franchise’s 25th-anniversary era.

That gives the new movie a chance to appeal to two generations at once: longtime fans who grew up with Manny, Sid and Diego, and a new generation discovering the characters for the first time.

The franchise has already become one of animation’s most recognizable properties, with five previous theatrical films before Boiling Point.

Who Is Making Ice Age: Boiling Point?

The new movie is directed by John Donkin, who previously directed The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild.

Lori Forte, a producer associated with the earlier Ice Age films, is producing the project.

The film is being released by 20th Century Studios and will arrive exclusively in theaters.

When Does Ice Age: Boiling Point Release?

Ice Age: Boiling Point is scheduled to premiere exclusively in theaters on:

February 5, 2027

Disney has officially confirmed the date, while the film is currently listed as an animated comedy/family adventure.

The movie will bring the original herd back to the big screen for the first time since Collision Course.

Geeksterr Take

The biggest selling point of Ice Age: Boiling Point may be its willingness to shake up the formula.

After five movies centered largely around icy landscapes and changing prehistoric environments, sending Manny and his friends into a volcanic underground world filled with dinosaurs gives the franchise a fresh visual identity.

Then there’s Scrat.

Giving the acorn-obsessed squirrel a Baby Scrat to look after could produce some of the movie’s funniest moments — particularly when the two are thrown into the middle of a volcanic disaster.

Whether Boiling Point can recreate the magic of the original movies remains to be seen, but the ingredients are certainly familiar: Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, Buck, Scrat, ridiculous danger and a whole lot of prehistoric chaos.

This time, however, the ice is melting.

And the next Ice Age adventure is about to get very, very hot.
