Hawaii Five-O Is Heading to the Big Screen — And the New Movie Has a Major Director Attached
The long-running Hawaii Five-O franchise could be getting a major Hollywood upgrade.
A feature-film adaptation of the classic crime series is reportedly being developed at Paramount, with filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton attached to develop and direct the project. The news is particularly interesting given Cretton’s growing profile in big-budget filmmaking.
The project would bring the iconic Hawaiian crime franchise from television to the cinema for the first time in a major feature-film treatment.
Destin Daniel Cretton Set to Lead the Movie
According to reports, Cretton is developing the Hawaii Five-O movie and is expected to direct it, with Chris Bremner writing the screenplay and Noah Oppenheim producing.
Cretton is no stranger to major studio productions. His involvement suggests that Paramount could be looking to turn Hawaii Five-O into a large-scale action thriller rather than simply producing a straightforward television-to-film adaptation.
That could give the franchise a completely new cinematic identity while retaining the elements that made the original so recognizable.

Hawaii Five-O has an unusually long history.

That means fans shouldn’t expect Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park or the other stars of the 2010 series to automatically reprise their roles.
The television reboot featured O’Loughlin as Steve McGarrett, Caan as Danny Williams, Kim as Chin Ho Kelly and Park as Kono Kalakaua.
Whether any familiar faces appear in the film remains one of the project’s biggest unanswered questions.
