Asa Germann Takes Flight as Angel in Marvel’s Upcoming X-Men Movie

Marvel’s new mutant era has found another familiar face. Asa Germann, best known for playing Sam Riordan in Gen V, is joining the upcoming X-Men movie as Warren Worthington III, better known as Angel. The casting was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter and has since been corroborated by other entertainment outlets.

The casting is an interesting turn for Germann. The actor had reportedly auditioned for the role of Scott Summers/Cyclops, but Marvel ultimately cast Heartstopper star Kit Connor in that part. Germann will instead take on Angel, one of the original X-Men characters from Marvel Comics.

From Gen V to the X-Men

Germann became widely recognized through Prime Video’s Gen V, where he played Sam Riordan, a troubled young supe with superhuman strength and durability. He also appeared in The Boys, allowing him to establish himself within the superhero genre before making the jump to Marvel.

His recent credits also include Scream 7, giving the actor another major franchise appearance before his move into the MCU.

The transition from Sam to Angel could give Germann a very different kind of superhero role. Rather than relying primarily on physical strength, Angel is one of Marvel’s classic flying mutants.

Who Is Angel?

In the comics, Angel is the superhero identity of Warren Worthington III, a wealthy mutant whose mutation gives him large feathered wings and the ability to fly.

The character debuted in the original X-Men comic lineup in 1963 and is one of the franchise’s earliest mutants. Angel has also had a darker evolution in Marvel Comics, eventually becoming Archangel, a more powerful and dangerous version of the character.

That history could give Marvel plenty of possibilities if the studio decides to explore Warren’s transformation over multiple films.

Angel has appeared on the big screen before, with Ben Foster playing the character in X-Men: The Last Stand and Ben Hardy portraying a younger version in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Another Piece of Marvel’s Mutant Lineup

Germann’s casting adds another recognizable name to Marvel’s developing X-Men ensemble.

The upcoming movie already includes Kit Connor as Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Maya Boyd as Storm, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister. Jake Schreier, who previously directed Thunderbolts, is directing the film.

The movie is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028.

Why Germann’s Casting Stands Out

There is an amusing full-circle element to the casting. Germann reportedly entered the process hoping to play one of the X-Men’s most recognizable leaders, Cyclops, only to ultimately land another member of the original team.

For Marvel, however, Angel could be an especially intriguing choice. Germann has already demonstrated that he can handle emotionally complicated characters, and Warren’s comic-book history gives the actor room to explore considerably more than just the character’s ability to fly.

It also continues Marvel’s apparent effort to build a new generation of X-Men actors, rather than simply recreating the previous Fox-era lineup.

The Bottom Line

Asa Germann is now set to take flight as Angel in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men movie, following his reported audition for Cyclops.

For fans who discovered Germann through Gen V, it’s a particularly exciting move: the actor is going from playing a superpowered character in the world of The Boys to becoming an actual member of Marvel’s mutant universe.

And if Marvel eventually takes Warren Worthington from Angel to Archangel, Germann could have a much bigger X-Men journey ahead of him.
