WWE SmackDown Results and Highlights (18/9/26): Sami Zayn fights Kevin Owens in the Main Event, Money In The Bank Qualifiers Continue
WWE SmackDown on September 18, 2026, turned into a night packed with championship pressure, Money in the Bank qualification battles and personal rivalries. Sami Zayn walked into the arena as the Undisputed WWE Champion after pulling off a stunning victory over CM Punk the previous week, but there was little time for him to celebrate. Zayn was immediately thrown into another high-stakes title situation against longtime rival Kevin Owens, putting the newly crowned champion under enormous pressure once again. With tensions rising throughout the night, SmackDown quickly established itself as a pivotal stop on the road ahead.

The episode also delivered several important Money in the Bank qualifying contests, with Randy Orton, Rey Fenix, Trick Williams, Jade Cargill, Alexa Bliss and Jacy Jayne all fighting for opportunities to secure their places in the highly anticipated ladder matches. Alongside the qualifying action, unexpected confrontations and shifting rivalries added even more uncertainty to an already unpredictable show. From championship drama to career-changing opportunities, this edition of SmackDown had plenty of developments that could shape WWE’s major storylines in the weeks to come.
Opening Segment
Sami Zayn kicked off SmackDown alongside Nick Aldis, taking a moment to celebrate his remarkable rise to the Undisputed WWE Championship. However, the celebration was quickly interrupted when Johnny Gargano stepped forward and made it clear that he wanted a championship opportunity of his own. Kevin Owens soon entered the conversation, pointing to his long and deeply personal history with Zayn while also reminding Aldis of his involvement in the previous week’s chaotic title situation. Owens argued that his connection with the champion and his history of battles with Zayn made him deserving of the next opportunity. After hearing both sides, Aldis settled the argument by making the blockbuster main event official: Sami Zayn would have to put his newly won Undisputed WWE Championship on the line against Kevin Owens.
Men’s Money In The Bank Qualifier
Randy Orton vs Trick Williams vs Rey Fenix
The race for a place in the men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match intensified as Randy Orton, Trick Williams and Rey Fenix collided in a fast-paced triple-threat qualifier. Orton relied on his trademark power and veteran experience to slow the pace, while Fenix repeatedly changed the complexion of the match with spectacular aerial offense. The high-flyer delivered a sunset powerbomb and looked to follow up with a frog splash, creating a major opening as all three competitors battled for control. With the qualification opportunity hanging in the balance, every counter became increasingly important.
The decisive sequence came when Fenix connected with a superkick on Orton and prepared to finish him with another frog splash. Orton, however, anticipated the attack and caught Fenix with a sudden RKO. Before Orton could capitalize, Trick Williams struck, catching Fenix with the Trick Shot and scoring the three-count. With the victory, Williams punched his ticket to the Money in the Bank Ladder Match, joining Bron Breakker and Je’Von Evans in the growing field. The result gives Williams a major opportunity to potentially secure a future WWE Championship opportunity with one briefcase hanging above the ring.
Women’s Money In The Bank Qualifier
Jacy Jayne vs Alexa Bliss vs Jade Cargill
The women’s Money in the Bank qualifying match delivered a three-way battle between Jacy Jayne, Jade Cargill and Alexa Bliss, with all three competitors bringing completely different styles into the contest. Cargill’s incredible power allowed her to take control for extended stretches, tossing both opponents around and creating several dangerous moments. Bliss, meanwhile, relied on her experience and opportunistic offense, coming within inches of victory after connecting with Sister Abigail on Jayne. Just when the match appeared to be slipping away, Cargill regained control and planted Bliss with Jaded.
Cargill looked ready to seal her place in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match, but Jayne had other plans. She broke up the pinfall attempt, sent Cargill out of the ring and immediately took advantage of a vulnerable Bliss. Jayne then covered Bliss and secured the decisive three-count, earning her spot in the women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match. The victory gives Jayne a major opportunity to climb the ladder and potentially walk away with a contract that could change the trajectory of her WWE career.
Shinsuke Nakamura & Kyoki vs Tama Tonga & Tala Tonga
WWE Tag Team Champions Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga put their titles on the line? No—the championships stayed safely out of the equation as the champions faced Shinsuke Nakamura and Kyoki in a heated non-title showdown. The challengers refused to be intimidated, with Bakusai unleashing a series of rapid attacks against the MFTs while Kyoki later raised the stakes with a daring dive that wiped out both champions at ringside. Just when the contest was gathering momentum, Haku dramatically changed the outcome by interfering and striking Nakamura with his walking stick, forcing the referee to call for the bell. Bakusai were awarded the victory via disqualification, but the official decision did little to calm the situation, as the MFTs and Haku continued their assault after the match, leaving the champions’ dominance overshadowed by another chaotic confrontation.
Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens (WWE Undisputed Championship)
Kevin Owens wasted no time turning the Undisputed WWE Championship match into a fight, attacking Sami Zayn before the champion could establish any rhythm. Owens controlled much of the opening stretch, using hard chops, a senton and a cannonball to keep Zayn under constant pressure. The situation took an unexpected turn when CM Punk stormed into the action and struck Owens with the WWE Championship. Zayn then dropped Punk with a Helluva Kick before covering Owens, but controversy followed when Owens appeared to get his shoulder up just before the referee counted three, leaving everyone at ringside questioning the finish.
With the championship hanging in the balance, Zayn refused to let the chaos derail him. The champion found another opening and connected with a second Helluva Kick on Owens, this time securing the official three-count and successfully retaining his Undisputed WWE Championship. However, the celebration lasted only moments as Punk returned to unleash more destruction, hitting both Zayn and Owens with GTS attacks. The chaotic ending left the rivalry far from settled and added another major chapter to the increasingly volatile relationship between the three WWE stars.
Other Notable Moments from The Show
– Michael Cole sat down with Cody Rhodes for a revealing conversation, bringing up the fact that several of the men who stood beside The American Nightmare during his WrestleMania 40 celebration have since turned against him. Cole questioned whether Rhodes still has a team to lead, but Cody shifted the focus away from individual alliances, insisting that WWE itself represents a much bigger team than the competitors currently chasing championship glory. When asked whether his approach needs to change, Rhodes looked back at his WrestleMania 42 victory over Randy Orton and appeared amused by the suggestion that he needs to reinvent himself. However, Cody made one thing clear ahead of his next encounter with The Viper: he will not repeat the mistake of showing mercy, promising to approach their upcoming battle with a far more ruthless mindset.
– Backstage, Tiffany Stratton delivered some important news to Chelsea Green, revealing that she would be stepping into a Money in the Bank qualifying match with a potential path toward championship glory on the line. Before the conversation could go any further, Nikki Bella arrived and immediately shifted the mood, showing little respect for either woman and making her presence felt. Bella then turned her attention toward the bigger picture, sending a direct warning that she has her sights firmly set on the WWE Women’s Championship. Her confrontation added another layer to the women’s division, suggesting that the championship picture could become even more unpredictable in the weeks ahead.
