Jennifer Lawrence Joins Zach Cregger’s Sci-Fi Thriller The Flood

Jennifer Lawrence is set to headline The Flood, the mysterious new science-fiction thriller from Barbarian, Weapons and Resident Evil filmmaker Zach Cregger.

Jennifer Lawrence has found her next major feature.

The Oscar-winning actress is officially joining Zach Cregger’s The Flood, an original science-fiction thriller being developed by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. The project is scheduled to reach theaters on August 11, 2028.

Unlike many of Cregger’s recent projects, The Flood is not based on an existing franchise. The filmmaker is returning to an original story, although virtually everything about its plot is currently being kept secret.

Jennifer Lawrence Takes the Lead

Lawrence will serve as the film’s central star, marking her latest collaboration with a major studio on an original genre project.

Cregger expressed excitement about working with Lawrence, describing her as a unique talent and saying he was looking forward to seeing her take on the role. Warner Bros. executives have similarly described the project as an ambitious and original vision from the filmmaker.

However, Lawrence’s character has not yet been revealed, leaving the nature of her role one of the film’s biggest unanswered questions.

Zach Cregger Is Behind the Camera

Cregger will write and direct The Flood, continuing his increasingly prominent run as a filmmaker.

He broke through with 2022’s Barbarian before following it with Weapons, and he is also behind the upcoming Resident Evil film. His recent projects have established a reputation for blending genre elements with unusual storytelling structures.

Cregger has previously described The Flood as science fiction containing moments of horror rather than a conventional horror movie. He has also teased its unusual narrative structure while keeping the actual story details under wraps.

That makes the film particularly intriguing: audiences know the genre and the filmmaker, but almost nothing about what the movie is actually about.

Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Is Producing

The Flood is being produced by Amblin Entertainment, the company founded by Steven Spielberg, alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment.

The film is being made through New Line Cinema and will be distributed theatrically by Warner Bros.

The project also continues Cregger’s relationship with New Line following Weapons, which became a major theatrical success for the studio.

What Is The Flood About?

That’s the biggest mystery surrounding the movie.

No official plot synopsis has been released.

Cregger has previously indicated that the project is very different from Barbarian and Weapons in terms of its storytelling approach. He has called it a particularly challenging film for him and described it as science fiction with horror elements rather than something designed primarily to scare audiences.

For now, Warner Bros. is keeping the premise completely under wraps.

That means details regarding the setting, Lawrence’s character, the nature of the “flood” referenced by the title and the film’s broader science-fiction mythology remain unknown.

From Netflix Development to the Big Screen

The Flood has already gone through an interesting journey before reaching its current form.

The project was previously being developed at Netflix, but reports indicated that Cregger wanted a theatrical release and the project ultimately moved away from the streamer. Warner Bros. later announced the film as part of its continued partnership with the filmmaker.

The theatrical commitment is now firmly in place, with the movie scheduled for August 11, 2028.

Cregger’s Busy Run Continues

Cregger currently has several high-profile projects connected to him.

Following Weapons, he moved into the Resident Evil franchise while also developing The Flood. New Line is also working on Gladys, a prequel connected to Weapons, although Cregger is not directing that project.

With The Flood, however, Cregger returns to an entirely original world.

And this time, he’ll have Jennifer Lawrence at the center of it.

The Flood Release Date

The Flood is currently scheduled to open exclusively in theaters on:

August 11, 2028

Jennifer Lawrence will star, with Zach Cregger writing and directing. Amblin Entertainment, Vertigo Entertainment, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. are involved in the production and release.

More casting announcements and story details are expected as production moves closer.

For now, The Flood remains one of Hollywood’s more closely guarded original sci-fi projects — and with Lawrence joining Cregger, it has become an even more notable upcoming release.
