Ella Bright Lands Her First Major Studio Role Opposite Mason Thames in Sony’s Narcs
Ella Bright is making the jump from streaming romance to the big screen.
The actress, best known for Prime Video’s romantic drama series Off Campus, has landed her first major studio feature role, joining Mason Thames in Sony Pictures’ upcoming coming-of-age comedy Narcs.

The casting was reported exclusively by Deadline, which describes Bright as the female lead opposite Thames.
Ella Bright Joins Narcs
Bright will star alongside Mason Thames, the young actor who has recently become one of Hollywood’s recognizable rising talents through projects including The Black Phone and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon.
For Bright, Narcs represents a significant move from television into a major studio production.
She has built her profile through Off Campus, Prime Video’s romantic drama series, and the Sony project will give her an opportunity to reach a much larger theatrical audience.
While the film’s story remains under wraps, Sony has confirmed the project as a coming-of-age comedy.
What Is Narcs About?
That’s currently the biggest mystery surrounding the movie.
Sony is keeping the plot details confidential, so there is currently no official synopsis explaining who Thames and Bright will play or what situation brings the characters together.
The lack of story information is particularly interesting considering the creative team behind the project.
Narcs is being written by Jordan and Justin Shipley, the brothers who created the TBS comedy Wrecked. The screenplay has also received a rewrite from John Phillips and Gene Stupnitsky.
John Phillips Makes His Directorial Debut
Narcs will mark John Phillips’ feature directorial debut.
Phillips has previously worked as a screenwriter on R-rated comedies including Good Boys, Dirty Grandpa and Sony’s No Hard Feelings.
His connection to No Hard Feelings is particularly notable because Gene Stupnitsky — who is producing Narcs — directed that Sony comedy.
Stupnitsky is producing the new film through his Big Name Entertainment banner, with Robert Lamonaca serving as an executive producer alongside Phillips.
The combination of Phillips, Stupnitsky and the Shipley brothers suggests that Narcs is being assembled around an established comedy-writing team, even though the movie itself remains largely a mystery.
Mason Thames Continues Expanding His Career
For Mason Thames, Narcs is another opportunity to move beyond the roles that first brought him widespread attention.
Thames broke out with Scott Derrickson’s 2021 horror film The Black Phone, before taking on the role of Hiccup in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon.
He subsequently returned for The Black Phone 2 and is expected to reprise Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon 2, which is scheduled for June 11, 2027.
But Narcs is also part of a noticeable change in the types of projects appearing on his résumé.
The actor has recently taken on more comedy-oriented material, including Idiots and Nimrods. He is also attached to Donnie Yen’s Caine, a spin-off set in the John Wick universe.
A New Direction for Ella Bright
Bright’s casting could prove to be an equally important career step.
Off Campus gave her a platform in the streaming television space, while Narcs puts her directly into a Sony Pictures feature.
The film also gives Bright the chance to work alongside Thames at a point when the actor is increasingly moving between horror, fantasy, comedy and major franchise projects.
Because the film’s plot and character descriptions are being kept secret, it is too early to know exactly what kind of performance Bright will be giving audiences.
But her role as the female lead confirms that she won’t simply be making a brief appearance.
When Will Narcs Be Released?
For now, Sony has not announced a release date for Narcs, and production details remain limited.
There is also no confirmed information about the film’s theatrical rollout or whether Sony has finalized additional casting.
That means the project is still very much in its early stages.
Geeksterr Take
What makes Narcs interesting isn’t just another casting announcement.
It’s the combination of a rising young cast and a comedy team with some recognizable credits.
Mason Thames has already demonstrated that he can headline major studio productions, while Ella Bright now gets her first opportunity to take that next step on the big screen.
Then there’s John Phillips, making the jump from writing successful comedies to directing one himself.
And perhaps the smartest detail to keep an eye on is the secrecy surrounding the story.
With Sony revealing almost nothing about the actual premise, Narcs is currently one of those movies where the cast and creative team are the story — at least until the studio is ready to show audiences what the title actually means.
For now, one thing is clear: Ella Bright’s Hollywood journey just got considerably bigger.
