Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest Gets 2029 Theatrical Release Date

Warner Bros. has officially set June 1, 2029, as the theatrical release date for Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, the first feature film in the franchise.

The world of Westeros is finally heading to the big screen.

After years of Game of Thrones stories dominating television, Warner Bros. has officially dated Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest for theatrical release. The upcoming movie will arrive in cinemas on June 1, 2029, marking the first feature film set in the Game of Thrones universe.

The project will be directed by Owen Harris, who previously directed three episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, while the screenplay is being written by Beau Willimon, known for House of Cards and his work on Andor.

Aegon the Conqueror Finally Gets His Own Movie

As the title suggests, Aegon’s Conquest will take the franchise much further back in Westerosi history.

The story is expected to focus on Aegon I Targaryen, better known as Aegon the Conqueror, and his campaign to conquer and unite much of Westeros. The events take place roughly 300 years before the original Game of Thrones.

Aegon invaded Westeros alongside his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys Targaryen, with their three dragons — Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes — playing a crucial role in the conquest.

His victory ultimately established the Targaryen dynasty’s rule over Westeros and led to the creation of the Iron Throne.

The story is drawn from the history established in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which also serves as the source material for House of the Dragon.

Owen Harris Is Directing

The film has also found its director in Owen Harris.

Harris already has experience within the Westeros universe, having directed three episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. His other credits include Black Mirror, The Twilight Zone and Brave New World.

That connection gives the upcoming movie a filmmaker who has already worked within the visual and dramatic language of Westeros.

Beau Willimon Is Writing the Screenplay

The screenplay comes from Beau Willimon, whose previous work includes creating House of Cards and writing for Andor.

Willimon’s involvement was previously reported while the project was still in development, but the latest announcement gives the movie a much clearer path toward becoming a major theatrical release.

The First Game of Thrones Movie

One of the biggest aspects of Aegon’s Conquest is what it represents for the franchise.

Unlike House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which were developed as television series, Aegon’s Conquest is being made specifically for cinemas. It will therefore be the first feature film in the Game of Thrones franchise.

The movie will also introduce audiences to a period of Westerosi history that has never been directly portrayed on screen. Aegon the Conqueror himself has never appeared as a character in the existing television adaptations.

Casting and Production Details Are Still Under Wraps

Despite the release date announcement, Warner Bros. has not yet revealed the movie’s cast or provided extensive production details.

That means there is currently no confirmed actor playing Aegon, nor have the studio and filmmakers announced when principal photography will begin.

For now, the major confirmed pieces are the theatrical date, director and writer.

Westeros Is Expanding Beyond Television

Aegon’s Conquest represents another major expansion of George R.R. Martin’s fictional universe.

The franchise already has House of the Dragon exploring the Targaryen civil war roughly two centuries before Game of Thrones, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms moves the timeline closer to the original series.

Now, Aegon’s Conquest will travel even further into the past to tell the story of the event that helped establish the Targaryens as Westeros’ ruling dynasty.

And with dragons, the conquest of Westeros and the creation of the Iron Throne at the center of the story, the movie has plenty of material from Martin’s mythology to draw upon.

When Will Aegon’s Conquest Release?

Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest is scheduled to premiere exclusively in theaters on:

June 1, 2029

The movie will be directed by Owen Harris and written by Beau Willimon.

With several years still remaining before its theatrical debut, Warner Bros. has plenty of time to reveal the cast, production plans, first-look footage and additional story details.

For Game of Thrones fans, however, one thing is now official: Westeros is coming to the big screen.
