James Gunn & Peter Safran Will Remain at DC Studios After Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger

The upcoming Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger is set to reshape one of Hollywood’s biggest entertainment companies, but DC Studios appears to be keeping its leadership intact.

According to reports from Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn and Peter Safran are expected to remain in charge of DC Studios after Paramount Skydance completes its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The development comes as the two companies prepare for a major corporate transition that will bring Warner Bros., DC, HBO, CNN, CBS and Paramount’s entertainment properties under the same corporate umbrella.

Gunn and Safran’s DC Future Remains Intact

Since taking control of DC Studios, Gunn and Safran have been responsible for developing a connected slate of DC movies and television projects. Their continued involvement means the creative direction established under the new DC Studios structure is expected to remain in place despite the corporate changes above it.

The pair recently met with Skydance chief David Ellison to discuss their future. Reports indicate that the meeting went well, with Gunn and Safran expected to continue overseeing DC’s film, television and comic-book operations.

This is particularly significant because the merger is expected to bring changes across Warner Bros.’ existing leadership structure. Reports say Warner Bros. film chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy are set to depart, while Gunn and Safran are among the executives being retained.

What Happens to the DC Universe?

For DC fans, the immediate question is what the merger means for the franchise’s upcoming projects.

Gunn is currently working on Man of Tomorrow, the follow-up to his Superman reboot, while other projects including Clayface, The Batman Part II and Lanterns are part of the wider DC slate.

With Gunn and Safran staying in their positions, there is currently no indication that the broader creative strategy behind the new DC Universe will be completely abandoned because of the corporate merger.

However, the exact corporate reporting structure for DC Studios is still an important piece of the puzzle. The combined company is expected to reorganize several of its film operations, meaning the relationship between DC Studios and the new Paramount-led management structure could evolve once the transaction officially closes.

A Massive Hollywood Shake-Up

The Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery transaction represents one of the largest media mergers in recent Hollywood history. The combined company will bring together major entertainment brands and platforms including Warner Bros., DC, HBO Max, Paramount Pictures, Paramount+ and CBS. Reuters reports that the combined company will operate under the Skydance name once the transaction is completed.

A U.S. federal judge recently approved the settlement that clears the way for the merger to close, with the transaction expected to be completed on October 6, 2026.

The biggest uncertainty now isn’t whether DC Studios will have new ownership — it will — but how much creative independence the DC division will retain within the newly combined entertainment giant.

For now, Gunn and Safran staying at the helm provides some continuity for the DC Universe during what is otherwise a major corporate transformation.

What This Means for DC Fans

James Gunn is expected to remain in charge of DC Studios.

Peter Safran is also expected to continue leading the division.

DC’s upcoming film and television projects remain in development.

Warner Bros.’ broader film leadership is undergoing changes.

Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery are moving toward a combined company called Skydance.

The long-term corporate structure of DC Studios under the new ownership remains an area to watch.

The merger may change the boardroom, but for now, DC’s creative leadership appears set to stay the course.
