Kevin Feige Opens Up on Blade Reboot Collapse: “I Feel Like a Gigantic Loser”
After years of uncertainty surrounding Marvel Studios’ long-delayed Blade reboot, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has spoken candidly about the project’s fate. During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Feige admitted that the film starring Mahershala Ali is no longer moving forward in its planned form, describing the outcome as one of the biggest disappointments of his career.
“I feel like a gigantic loser,” Feige said while reflecting on the project’s troubled journey. The reboot was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, with Mahershala Ali revealed as the MCU’s new Blade. However, the film spent years in development, facing multiple director changes, numerous script rewrites, and repeated production delays that ultimately prevented it from reaching cameras.
The ambitious reboot was intended to introduce the legendary vampire hunter into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but behind-the-scenes challenges repeatedly stalled progress. Despite Marvel’s efforts to reshape the script and creative direction, the studio was unable to find a version that satisfied both the filmmakers and its long-term vision for the character.
The news comes after Wesley Snipes made a surprise return as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine, a performance that was widely praised by fans. While that appearance celebrated the character’s cinematic legacy, it also highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Marvel’s planned reboot featuring Mahershala Ali.
Although the original reboot has reportedly been shelved, this does not necessarily mean Blade has no future in the MCU. Marvel Studios has not ruled out bringing the Daywalker back in another form, whether through a reworked project or a future appearance in a different Marvel film.
For now, the cancellation marks the end of one of Marvel Studios’ most challenging development stories. What began as one of the biggest announcements of Comic-Con 2019 ultimately became a project that never reached production, despite years of work behind the scenes.
