HBO’s Harry Potter Season 2 Finds Its Dobby, Tom Riddle and New Ginny Weasley

HBO’s new Harry Potter series hasn’t even premiered its first season yet, but the studio is already building the next chapter of its Wizarding World adaptation.

Three important Season 2 roles have now been filled, with Lenny Rush joining as Dobby, Billy Barratt taking on the role of young Tom Riddle, and Bonnie Hill becoming the new Ginny Weasley.

The casting is particularly significant because all three characters become central to the events of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second book in J.K. Rowling’s series, which Season 2 is expected to adapt.

Lenny Rush Is the New Dobby

One of the most anticipated casting decisions for the second season was always going to be Dobby.

Lenny Rush has been cast as the beloved house-elf. Rush is known for projects including Am I Being Unreasonable?, Dodger and A Woman of Substance. He is also a BAFTA-winning performer.

The actor has been cast as Tom Riddle, the young version of the character who eventually becomes Lord Voldemort.

Barratt is particularly notable because he became the youngest International Emmy winner after winning Best Actor for his performance in Responsible Child. He has also appeared in Apple’s Invasion and the film Bring Her Back.

His casting gives the series the opportunity to explore one of the most important revelations in The Chamber of Secrets: the connection between Hogwarts student Tom Riddle and the Dark Lord Harry will eventually come to know as Voldemort.

The original Chamber of Secrets movie featured Christian Coulson as the teenage Riddle. HBO’s series will now introduce its own interpretation of the character.

And there’s an interesting detail here.

The television adaptation appears to be casting closer to the character’s actual age described in the books, potentially giving audiences a younger and more unsettling version of Riddle.

Bonnie Hill Takes Over as Ginny Weasley

The third major announcement involves one of the Weasley family’s most important members.

Bonnie Hill will play Ginny Weasley beginning with Season 2, replacing Gracie Cochrane, who portrays Ginny during the first season.

Cochrane’s departure was announced earlier this year. Her family said she had made the decision to step away from the series due to unforeseen circumstances, with HBO subsequently expressing its support for the decision.

Hill will therefore inherit the role just as Ginny’s importance to the story begins to increase dramatically.

Season 2 Is Already Taking Shape

What’s unusual about these announcements is that Season 1 hasn’t even premiered yet.

HBO’s first season, adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to debut on Christmas Day 2026.

Nevertheless, the network has already moved ahead with its plans for the second season.

The main trio — Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger — will return as the story moves into Harry’s second year at Hogwarts.

The Season 2 cast will also include Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart, following Nicholas Hoult’s departure from the role.

That means HBO is quickly assembling the cast needed for one of the darker and more mysterious chapters of the story.

The new casting announcements suggest that HBO isn’t simply recreating the movies scene-for-scene.
