PlayStation is cancelling Physical Discs
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that starting January 2028, they will no longer produce physical discs for new PlayStation Games. All the games will be sold as digital downloads through the PlayStation Store and as download codes at retail.
For many gamers, this news of Playstation moving away from physical discs feels like an end of an era. Generation of players grew up building collection of game cases, swapping discs with friends and lining up at the stores on launch day to pick up the latest releases.
Even I myself have all my PlayStation 2 game discs with me for memories. Me and my brother got PlayStation 2 as a gift on our birthday and we used to play all day, fight for winning and losses, waiting for every big new release game. I have kept them with me for all the memories those hold with my brother, with my father, and with my friends. It’s truly an end of a era.
While digital gaming offers convenience and instant access, many players still value the ownership, collectability, and preservation that physical discs provide.
For those who grew up with PlayStation consoles, from the original PlayStation and PS2 to the PS3, PS4, and PS5, game discs represent countless memories. Whether it was carefully protecting a favorite title from scratches or proudly displaying a growing collection on a shelf, physical games have remained a cherished part of gaming culture for decades.
