GTA 6 Is Going All-In on Florida: 170+ Animals, Hurricanes, Detailed NPCs and More Revealed

Rockstar Games has opened up about the enormous amount of research behind Grand Theft Auto VI, revealing new details about Leonida’s wildlife, weather, NPCs, world design and even how players can get around the map.

Grand Theft Auto VI is becoming much more than a bigger version of GTA V.

As part of Game Informer’s extensive GTA VI cover story, Rockstar Games has revealed a collection of new details about the world of Leonida. From more than 170 animal species and tropical storms to highly varied NPC body types and years of real-world Florida research, Rockstar says it has pushed the game’s scale, detail and interaction further than before.

For Rockstar, the goal appears to be making Leonida feel less like a traditional video-game map and more like a living version of Florida.

Rockstar Spent Years Researching Real Florida

One of the more unusual revelations concerns how Rockstar researched the setting.

According to Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, Rupert Humphries, development teams made repeated trips around Florida to experience different parts of the state firsthand.

That research included traveling around areas at night with former police officers, visiting nightclubs and strip clubs, spending time on beaches, exploring the Everglades and traveling through the Florida Keys.

The studio also spoke with people from different parts of Florida, including law enforcement and people with connections to the state’s criminal world, while cross-referencing those experiences with books and journalism.

The objective wasn’t simply to collect bizarre “Florida Man” stories.

Rockstar says it wanted to understand the state’s communities, environments and culture well enough to create a fictional version of Florida that feels believable.

That fictional state is Leonida.

GTA 6 Will Have More Than 170 Animal Species

Wildlife appears to be one of the biggest upgrades in GTA VI.

Rockstar has confirmed that Leonida will contain more than 170 animal species across its land, air and waterways. That includes more than 60 bird species and more than 30 land mammals, alongside fish and reptiles.

Some confirmed examples include:

– Alligators

– Flamingos

– Manatees

– Pelicans

– Green iguanas

– Cane toads

– Feral cats

– Rhesus macaque monkeys

The wildlife system is also designed to go beyond simply placing animals around the map.

Rockstar says it is building on the animal technology used in Red Dead Redemption 2, with systems for things such as iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency and different feather types, alongside improved hair and fur technology.

Certain animals can also fall into categories such as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, although Rockstar hasn’t revealed exactly which creatures belong to those categories.

Leonida Won’t Always Have Perfect Sunshine

Florida’s weather is another major focus.

GTA VI will feature a dynamic weather system capable of producing everything from clear skies to localized storms, tropical storms and hurricanes.

The system reportedly allows different parts of Leonida to experience different weather simultaneously.

You could be driving through an area with clear skies while seeing a storm approaching somewhere else in the distance. Once the storm passes, its effects won’t simply disappear immediately.

Puddles and wet surfaces can remain behind, while lighting conditions can even produce rainbows after a storm.

Rockstar is also using dynamic clouds and wind systems to make weather feel more connected to the environment. Wind can affect things such as vegetation, water and objects around the world.

And when the conditions become extreme, hurricanes and tropical storms can hit Leonida.

Rockstar hasn’t yet explained exactly how frequently major storms occur or how deeply they will affect missions and gameplay.

NPCs Are Getting a Major Overhaul

The people walking around Leonida are also receiving a significant upgrade.

Rockstar says NPCs can have different heights and body types, with variation in musculature and how weight is distributed across different parts of the body. Skin details such as freckles, moles and tanning are also being represented.

The differences aren’t limited to physical appearance.

Rockstar has reportedly paid close attention to:

– Hair and grooming styles

– Tattoos

– Clothing

– Accessories

– Footwear

– Regional fashion

– Skin characteristics

– Cultural differences between communities

NPC clothing can change depending on the area of Leonida, with Rockstar creating what it describes as its largest range of garments and accessories yet.

There’s also a dedicated Rockstar team working on NPC dialogue, further emphasizing how much attention is being given to the people populating the world.

Rockstar Says It Didn’t Want to Compromise Scale for Detail

With expectations surrounding GTA VI at an unprecedented level, Rockstar says it deliberately attempted to avoid the usual compromises involved in creating a massive open-world game.

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut described the approach as trying to “overdeliver,” saying the studio wanted to increase the game’s detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density rather than sacrificing one area for another.

That philosophy appears to extend throughout Leonida.

Rockstar says it has paid attention not only to major landmarks but also to rooftops, alleys, building interiors and the spaces between locations.

The result is intended to be a world where the different regions feel connected rather than like separate gameplay zones.

Even Getting Around Can Become an Activity

One of the more interesting details shown in the material surrounding the cover story is the RyderMe fast-travel service.

The service reportedly allows players to travel around Leonida by sharing rides with other passengers.

What makes it different from simply selecting a fast-travel point is that players can reportedly interact with passengers and have conversations during the journey.

That fits into Rockstar’s broader approach to making even downtime in the open world feel interactive.

Rather than every journey being about driving at maximum speed, the game can potentially turn some travel into an opportunity to encounter characters and discover small pieces of Leonida.

There Is Plenty to Do Outside the Main Story

Rockstar has already shown a substantial number of optional activities in GTA VI.

The extended gameplay footage featured or suggested activities including:

– Kayaking

– Scuba diving

– Fishing

– Base jumping

– Jet skiing

– Airboating

– Racing

– Off-road racing

– Weight training

– Basketball

– Backyard wrestling

– Shooting ranges

– Visiting strip clubs

– Swimming and water activities

Game Informer’s earlier breakdown identified many of these activities directly from the extended gameplay footage, while some additional activities reported around the new cover story should still be treated as reported details rather than individually confirmed mechanics.

This means Leonida isn’t simply somewhere to drive between missions.

The environment itself is intended to provide reasons to leave the main storyline and explore.

GTA 6 Is Trying to Make Leonida Feel Alive

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Rockstar’s comments isn’t any individual feature.

It’s how these systems are supposed to work together.

The wildlife, weather, NPCs, clothing, environmental detail, regional differences, side activities and transportation systems all contribute to the same objective: making Leonida feel like a functioning place rather than a collection of missions surrounded by empty space.

Rockstar has previously demonstrated this philosophy with Red Dead Redemption 2, but GTA VI is taking that approach into a contemporary setting with a considerably larger technological toolbox.

And with Grand Theft Auto VI currently scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, players won’t have to wait much longer to see how much of Rockstar’s ambition actually translates into the finished game.

For now, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Leonida isn’t being designed merely as the backdrop for Jason and Lucia’s story. Rockstar wants the world itself to be one of GTA VI’s biggest characters
