Ted: The Animated Series Gets December Premiere on Peacock — John and Ted Are Back 12 Years Later

The thunder buddies are back — and this time, they’re animated.

Peacock has officially set December 17, 2026 as the premiere date for Ted: The Animated Series, the next chapter in Seth MacFarlane’s foul-mouthed teddy bear franchise. The animated series will continue the story established by Ted and Ted 2, jumping forward 12 years after the events of the second movie.

The new series brings back MacFarlane alongside several of the original movie cast members, including Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried and Jessica Barth.

And judging from the first look, growing up hasn’t exactly made Ted and John any more responsible.

Ted and John Are Older — But Apparently Not Wiser

The biggest change this time around is the timeline.

Ted: The Animated Series takes place 12 years after Ted 2. John Bennett and Ted are now adults with families of their own, living as next-door neighbors while trying to navigate the less glamorous parts of adulthood.

That means the new show isn’t a prequel like Peacock’s existing live-action ted series.

Instead, it serves as a direct continuation of the movie storyline.

John and Ted have moved well beyond their younger years, but their friendship — and their talent for making terrible decisions — remains intact.

According to Peacock’s official description, the pair will be dealing with everything from family life and dead-end jobs to the kind of chaotic situations that have defined their relationship from the beginning.

Seth MacFarlane Returns as Ted

There’s one element of the franchise that isn’t changing.

Seth MacFarlane is back as the voice of Ted.

MacFarlane created the character and previously voiced Ted throughout the two movies as well as Peacock’s live-action prequel series.

This time, however, he’s taking the character back into the animated format that helped establish his career with shows such as Family Guy and American Dad!.

Peacock says the animated format will allow the series to continue the franchise’s rapid-fire comedy and adult humor while giving Ted a completely new visual playground.

Mark Wahlberg Is Back as John

Perhaps the most surprising part of the casting is the return of Mark Wahlberg as the voice of John Bennett.

Wahlberg played the adult John in both Ted movies, and he’ll reprise the role for the animated series.

That gives the show a direct connection to the original films rather than simply recasting the character for animation.

Amanda Seyfried will also return as Sam, while Jessica Barth reprises her role as Tami-Lynn, Ted’s wife.

The Returning Cast

Seth MacFarlane — Ted

Mark Wahlberg — John Bennett

Amanda Seyfried — Sam

Jessica Barth — Tami-Lynn

Kyle Mooney — Apollo

Liz Richman — Ruth

Kyle Mooney and Liz Richman are joining the returning stars as new additions to the animated show’s cast, with Mooney voicing Apollo and Richman playing Ruth.

What Happened After Ted 2?

The animated series picks up from the ending of Ted 2 rather than restarting the story.

At the end of the second film, Ted had established himself as a person with his own rights and continued his relationship with Tami-Lynn, while John and Sam were looking toward their future together.

Now, more than a decade has passed.

The new series essentially asks:

What happened to these characters after the movies ended?

The answer appears to be a very adult version of the same dysfunctional friendship.

John and Ted now have families, jobs and responsibilities — but the franchise isn’t suddenly turning them into responsible grown-ups.

If anything, their adult problems seem likely to create a whole new collection of disasters.

Eight Episodes Are Coming at Launch

Peacock has confirmed that the first season will consist of eight episodes, all arriving on December 17, 2026. Additional episodes are already planned for 2027.

That means fans won’t have to wait week after week for the initial batch.

Instead, the entire first season will be available to stream when the animated series premieres.

How Does It Connect to Peacock’s Live-Action Ted Series?

This is where things could get confusing for viewers.

Peacock already has a live-action ted series starring Max Burkholder as a younger John Bennett, with MacFarlane again providing Ted’s voice.

But that show is a prequel.

The live-action series takes place in the 1990s, before the events of the movies, and explores John’s teenage years with Ted. Its second season premiered in March 2026.

Ted: The Animated Series takes the opposite approach.

It moves forward from the movies, following the adult versions of John and Ted.

So Peacock now effectively has two different points in the Ted timeline:

1990s → ted live-action series

2012/2015 → Ted and Ted 2

12 years later → Ted: The Animated Series

That makes the animated show a particularly interesting continuation of the franchise.

The Animation Could Take Ted to Places the Movies Couldn’t

There’s also a major creative advantage to bringing Ted back through animation.

MacFarlane has spent much of his career working in adult animation, and the medium gives the series significantly more freedom when it comes to visual comedy, exaggerated situations and completely absurd scenarios.

Peacock itself describes the animated format as allowing Ted to go places the live-action version couldn’t.

Considering the character’s personality, that seems like a pretty natural fit.

A foul-mouthed talking teddy bear living next door to his best friend already requires audiences to accept a fairly ridiculous premise.

Animation simply gives the writers even more room to push it.

First Look Reveals a Very Different Ted

The first-look material released by Peacock shows Ted and John in their new animated form, with the series retaining the recognizable personalities of the characters while giving the entire franchise a new visual style.

The basic setup remains familiar:

Ted + John + terrible decisions = chaos.

But this time, they’re dealing with marriage, parenting, jobs and the responsibilities that come with being older.

And if the franchise’s previous stories are any indication, Ted probably isn’t going to make adulthood particularly easy for anyone.

When Does Ted: The Animated Series Premiere?

Ted: The Animated Series premieres December 17, 2026, exclusively on Peacock.

The first season will contain eight episodes, with more episodes planned for 2027.

So, after years of seeing Ted and John in live action — and after Peacock explored their teenage years through its prequel — the franchise is now jumping into animation for its next chapter.

Geeksterr Take

What makes Ted: The Animated Series particularly interesting is that it isn’t simply another remake of the movies in cartoon form.

It’s actually moving the story forward.

John and Ted are older. They have families. They’re neighbors. They have jobs. And somehow, despite all of that, they’re still the same two idiots we’ve known since 2012.

Bringing Seth MacFarlane, Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried and Jessica Barth back makes the animated series feel much more connected to the original movies, while the animated format gives MacFarlane and his team considerably more freedom.

If you’re wondering what happened to Ted and John after Ted 2, Peacock is finally giving us the answer.

And knowing Ted, it probably won’t be a particularly responsible one.
