Supergirl Reportedly Faced Creative Differences Between DC Studios and Craig Gillespie

It is being reported that there have been creative differences between James Gunn and Supergirl director Craig Gillespie. During the test screenings of Supergirl they reportedly showed two versions of Supergirl one which was directed by Craig Gillespie and other one which studio mandated edit by James Gunn. The director’s version had 11 minutes of extra footage and featured more footage of villain Krem which was not shown in the theatres.

James Gunn took over the part of post- production due to creative differences with director Craig Gillespie. During the edits, James Gunn personally saw and choose the footage featuring in final fight scene in the climax.

Both the versions or cuts of Supergirl struggled through screen tests, achieving extremely low test scores with studio mandated cut by James Gun stood out the most with just a mere two points.

There were several flawed moments in both versions like the director Craig Gillespie’s cut attempted to provide a deeper and more detailed look at the story, but for many viewers it only amplified the film’s existing issues. Fans and Screeners pointed to an uneven pace, a lack of narrative focus, and scenes that felt disconnected from the overall plot, making the experience feel longer without necessarily improving the storytelling. While some appreciated the additional content, others felt the director’s cut struggled to deliver a more cohesive or satisfying version of the film while Gunn’s revised cut narrowly edged out the competition and was ultimately selected as the version released in theaters. While it found its supporters, many fans took issue with several of its creative decisions. One of the most heavily criticized moments was a slow-motion sequence accompanied by Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle,” which quickly became a frequent target of online jokes and criticism. Viewers also expressed concerns about the film’s soundtrack choices and felt the final act lacked the impact and payoff needed to deliver a truly memorable conclusion.

I think the fans of DC Studios and Supergirl should decide it for themselves whether they liked James Gunn’s studio mandated cut or not.
