Disney+ Officially Orders Afterlife with Archie Series, Sets Halloween 2027 Premiere
Disney+ is officially diving into the world of horror with Archie Comics. The streaming platform has greenlit Afterlife with Archie, a live-action drama series based on the acclaimed comic book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla, with a premiere planned for Halloween 2027.
The series marks another collaboration between writer and executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, producer Greg Berlanti, Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. Television. The project had previously received a script-to-series commitment before earning a full series order, signaling Disney+’s confidence in the adaptation.
Unlike the lighthearted stories traditionally associated with Archie and his friends, Afterlife with Archie takes the beloved Riverdale characters into a terrifying zombie apocalypse. The comic became a fan favorite for blending supernatural horror with the familiar world of Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and the rest of the gang, creating one of the darkest interpretations of the franchise.
The upcoming show also makes history as Warner Bros. Television’s first scripted series produced for Disney+. It will be the third live-action Archie Comics adaptation from the creative team, following the success of Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. While those series eventually found homes on different networks and streaming services, Afterlife with Archie will debut exclusively on Disney+.
Speaking about the announcement, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa described the adaptation as a dream project, noting that Afterlife with Archie was the comic that helped launch his darker vision of the Archie universe. He expressed his excitement about finally bringing the zombie-filled story to television and teased that the beloved Riverdale characters are about to face their most terrifying challenge yet.
With a Halloween 2027 release window already confirmed, Afterlife with Archie is shaping up to be one of Disney+’s most ambitious horror projects.
