India’s First Electric Air Taxi Takes Shape: Meet the e200X PT-01

What is the e200X PT-01?
The e200X PT-01 is an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft developed by Chennai-based startup The ePlane Company. Unlike conventional helicopters, the aircraft is designed to be quieter, more compact, and fully electric, making it a promising solution for urban transportation.
According to the company, the prototype has an estimated flight range of around 110 kilometers, enough to cover routes such as Mumbai to Pune (partial regional routes) or Chennai to Puducherry with suitable operational planning.
Built for More Than Passenger Travel
Although many people associate air taxis with daily commuting, the ePlane Company plans to introduce the aircraft in phases.
The first commercial application is expected to focus on air ambulance services, allowing emergency medical teams to transport patients much faster than traditional road ambulances in traffic-heavy cities.
Once the aircraft completes development and receives regulatory approvals, the company aims to expand its use to:

The ePlane Company expects to begin certified flight testing by mid-2027, an important step before the aircraft can enter commercial service.

Years of Development Behind the Prototype
While the e200X PT-01 is the company’s first full-scale aircraft, it is far from its first flying machine.
Since 2021, the company has accumulated more than 10,000 kilometres of subscale flight testing through earlier experimental platforms. Development began with the ATVA demonstrator, a one-fifth-scale version of the current aircraft, followed by the heavy-lift drone known as the e50.
These test programs have helped engineers validate key technologies before scaling them up for the full-size air taxi.
