Donald Glover to Write, Direct, and Star in Live-Action PUBG Series for Netflix

Netflix is bringing one of gaming’s biggest battle royale franchises to television, with award-winning actor and musician Donald Glover attached to lead a live-action series based on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). Glover is set to take on multiple roles behind and in front of the camera, serving as the show’s writer, director, and lead star. The project will also see him collaborate with his brother, Stephen Glover, who will co-write the script. The announcement marks another major step in Netflix’s growing interest in adapting popular video game franchises for television.

Donald Glover Takes on Multiple Roles

Glover’s involvement goes well beyond playing the lead character. The Atlanta creator will also executive produce the project, bringing his experience as a writer, filmmaker, and performer to the adaptation. His brother Stephen Glover, with whom he previously collaborated on several projects, including Atlanta and Swarm, will also serve as a writer and executive producer. The production team additionally includes Michael Schaefer for NEON TV, Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee representing KRAFTON’s entertainment division, LV3H. Games Press +1

What Can Fans Expect From the PUBG Series?

One of the biggest questions surrounding the adaptation is how Netflix will translate PUBG’s battle royale gameplay into a compelling television narrative. Unlike story-driven video games with established protagonists and detailed fictional universes, PUBG revolves around players landing on an island, gathering weapons and supplies, and fighting to become the last person standing. This gives Glover and his creative team considerable freedom to introduce original characters, rivalries, survival challenges, and unexpected twists while retaining the identity of the franchise.

However, Netflix and KRAFTON have yet to reveal the official storyline, additional cast members, production schedule, or release date. The project is currently in development, so viewers will likely have to wait for further announcements before learning more about the series.

Geeksterr Take

Donald Glover’s involvement makes this adaptation particularly interesting. His work on Atlanta demonstrated his ability to build distinctive characters and tell unconventional stories, and those creative strengths could be valuable when adapting a game like PUBG, which doesn’t follow a traditional narrative structure. Rather than simply recreating famous moments from the game, Netflix has an opportunity to develop an intense survival thriller with its own identity. If the creative team gets the balance between action, storytelling, and the game’s battle royale atmosphere right, this could become another exciting addition to the growing world of video game adaptations.
