Netflix Is Bringing Dungeons & Dragons’ Gothic Horror World to Life With Ravenloft
Netflix is heading into the darker corners of the Dungeons & Dragons universe. The streamer is developing Ravenloft, a new live-action series that will explore one of the franchise’s most celebrated gothic-horror settings, with Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón among the executive producers.
The project comes from John August, who will write and executive produce, with Cuarón, Richard Schwartz and Gaby Rodriguez also executive producing through Esperanto Filmoj. Hasbro Entertainment is involved as well, with Gabriel Marano serving as an executive producer for the company.
A Much Darker Side of Dungeons & Dragons
Unlike the more traditional fantasy adventures associated with Dungeons & Dragons, Ravenloft is rooted heavily in gothic horror, supernatural intrigue and tragic romance.
At the center of Netflix’s planned series is Strahd von Zarovich, the legendary vampire Darklord who rules over the haunted realm of Barovia. Rather than simply presenting Strahd as an established monster, the series is expected to explore how he became the villain audiences know, following his transformation from a tragic antihero into one of D&D’s most notorious figures.
The story will reportedly revolve around themes of power, love, obsession and the transformation into an undead being.
That gives Ravenloft an opportunity to feel substantially different from a conventional fantasy adaptation. Instead of focusing primarily on quests, battles and treasure hunting, the series appears positioned to lean into atmosphere, character drama and psychological horror.
Alfonso Cuarón Is Part of the Creative Team
One of the biggest reasons the announcement has immediately attracted attention is Alfonso Cuarón.
The filmmaker behind Gravity, Roma and Children of Men is executive producing the project alongside August and the other producers. Cuarón’s involvement could give the series a distinctly cinematic approach, particularly considering the filmmaker’s experience creating visually ambitious worlds and darker, character-driven stories.
This also marks an interesting return to Netflix for Cuarón. His 2018 film Roma became a landmark release for the streamer, earning 10 Academy Award nominations and winning three Oscars, including Best Director and Best Cinematography for Cuarón.
August is also a particularly fitting choice for Ravenloft. His writing credits include several gothic or fantasy projects associated with filmmaker Tim Burton, including Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Dark Shadows and Frankenweenie.
What Happened to The Forgotten Realms Series?
Interestingly, Ravenloft is not the same Dungeons & Dragons series Netflix previously had in development.
The streamer announced a Forgotten Realms project in 2025, with Drew Crevello attached as writer and Shawn Levy as executive producer. According to Deadline’s latest report, that series is no longer moving forward.
Ravenloft is instead a completely separate project with a new creative team and a different setting within the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
The change could ultimately work in Netflix’s favor. While Forgotten Realms represents the traditional high-fantasy side of D&D, Ravenloft gives the studio a much more distinctive identity to build around.
A D&D Horror Series With Strahd at Its Heart
Ravenloft has been part of Dungeons & Dragons mythology for decades. The setting originated with an adventure module created by Tracy and Laura Hickman in 1983 before eventually developing into an entire campaign setting filled with supernatural villains and different Domains of Dread.
Strahd, meanwhile, has become arguably the defining character of the setting.
That makes his origin story a particularly strong foundation for a television series. Netflix isn’t simply adapting a collection of tabletop adventures; it appears to be building a serialized story around the making of one of D&D’s most recognizable villains.
The franchise already has a connection to mainstream television audiences through Stranger Things, which has repeatedly incorporated Dungeons & Dragons into its mythology, with Ravenloft and Strahd also receiving references in the show’s final season.
No Cast or Release Date Yet
For now, Ravenloft remains in development, meaning viewers shouldn’t expect a release date or casting announcement just yet. The project has no confirmed premiere date, and the main cast has yet to be revealed.
Still, the combination of Netflix, Dungeons & Dragons, John August and Alfonso Cuarón makes this one of the more intriguing fantasy projects currently taking shape.
If Netflix gets the tone right, Ravenloft could offer something the D&D franchise hasn’t fully explored on screen before: a genuinely gothic, atmospheric fantasy-horror series built around the origin of an iconic vampire villain.
And with Strahd von Zarovich at the center of it all, the Mists of Ravenloft may have just found their next home on Netflix.
