FX’s Far Cry Live-Action Series Has Started Filming — Here’s Everything We Know

The long-awaited Far Cry television adaptation has officially moved from development into production.

FX’s upcoming live-action Far Cry series has begun filming, with production currently taking place in Spain. The project comes from Fargo and Alien: Earth creator Noah Hawley, alongside Rob Mac, and is being developed in partnership with Ubisoft Film & Television.

The first signs of production emerged on September 14, when cinematographer Polly Morgan shared a photo of the production clapperboard, effectively confirming that cameras had started rolling.

Filming Begins in Spain

Production has already made its presence felt in Málaga, where the series is using locations including the former provincial prison in Cruz de Humilladero.

According to local reports, the Málaga shoot involves a crew of roughly 350 people, with action sequences involving explosions, smoke effects and drones planned as part of the production.

The production is also expected to film in Zahara de la Sierra in Cádiz, giving the series access to the distinctive landscapes of southern Spain.

That location choice is particularly interesting for Far Cry. The video-game franchise has traditionally used isolated, visually striking environments as the backdrop for its stories, from tropical islands to mountainous regions and rural landscapes.

Steve Buscemi, Lizzy Caplan and Rob Mac Lead the Cast

The first season has assembled a surprisingly recognizable cast.

Steve Buscemi, Lizzy Caplan and Rob Mac are currently attached to the series. Ubisoft previously confirmed Caplan’s casting in June before announcing Buscemi’s involvement the following month.

Buscemi’s involvement is particularly intriguing considering his history with dark comedy, crime dramas and morally complicated characters. Caplan, meanwhile, brings experience from projects including Masters of Sex, Fleishman Is in Trouble and Zero Day.

However, the identities of their characters are still being kept under wraps.

And that secrecy may be intentional.

This Won’t Be a Direct Adaptation of Far Cry 3 or Far Cry 6

Perhaps the biggest thing fans should know is that FX isn’t simply turning one of the games into a television season.

Instead, Far Cry is being designed as an anthology series.

Each season is expected to tell a new story, introduce a different group of characters and move to a different setting — essentially following the same philosophy that has allowed the game franchise to reinvent itself between major installments.

That means fans shouldn’t necessarily expect to see a television version of Jason Brody and Vaas, Ajay Ghale, Dani Rojas or another existing protagonist.

For now, Season 1 appears to be telling its own original story rather than directly adapting one particular Far Cry game.

Noah Hawley Is Behind the Series

The creative team is arguably the biggest reason this adaptation has attracted attention.

Noah Hawley serves as the show’s creator/showrunner and executive producer. Hawley is best known for Fargo and Legion, while his more recent work includes FX’s Alien: Earth.

He is working with Rob Mac, who is also starring in the series.

That combination could give Far Cry a different identity from the usual video-game adaptation. Rather than simply recreating the games’ action, the series has the opportunity to explore the franchise’s darker themes, unpredictable characters and chaotic worlds through a television anthology format.

What Can Fans Expect From Season 1?

That’s where things get interesting.

FX and Ubisoft have deliberately kept the actual storyline under wraps. We don’t yet know the season’s central conflict, the identities of the main characters or which part of the Far Cry universe inspired the setting.

But the production locations already suggest that the show is aiming for a large-scale, cinematic presentation.

The Málaga shoot has reportedly involved explosions, smoke effects, extensive equipment and a sizeable international production crew.

For a franchise built around survival, violence, wilderness and larger-than-life antagonists, that could be exactly what the series needs.

A Second Chance for Far Cry on Screen

This isn’t actually the first time Far Cry has been adapted for live action.

The franchise previously received a 2008 film adaptation directed by Uwe Boll, but that movie was poorly received and has little connection to the ambitions of the new FX project.

The new series arrives at a very different moment for video-game adaptations, following the success of projects such as The Last of Us and other major game-to-screen productions.

FX and Ubisoft therefore have an opportunity to approach Far Cry as something more ambitious than simply another video-game adaptation.

When Will the Far Cry Series Release?

There is currently no confirmed premiere date for the series.

The show is still in production, with filming taking place in Spain during September and continuing into additional locations later in the month.

When it eventually arrives, the series is expected to be released through FX, with Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally.

Geeksterr Take: This Could Be the Right Way to Adapt Far Cry

The most exciting part of FX’s Far Cry isn’t necessarily the cast or even the locations.

It’s the decision not to be trapped by one game’s story.

The Far Cry franchise has always been about entering a new dangerous world, meeting unpredictable characters and trying to survive whatever chaos is waiting there. An anthology format gives the television series the freedom to replicate that feeling without forcing every season to follow the same protagonist.

And with Noah Hawley at the helm and Steve Buscemi, Lizzy Caplan and Rob Mac leading the first season, FX has assembled a combination that is difficult to ignore.

The real question now is simple:

Can FX turn the unpredictable chaos of Far Cry into a television series that finally lives up to the franchise’s potential?

Production has begun. Now, we wait to see what kind of world Hawley and Ubisoft have created.
