God of War: Laufey Screenshot Sparks Ancient Greece Speculation as Kratos Returns

A newly released screenshot from God of War: Laufey has given fans another major mystery to discuss. The image features Laufey standing alongside Kratos, but it is the environment surrounding the two characters that has attracted the most attention.

The architecture in the background appears strongly reminiscent of Ancient Greece, leading to speculation that the upcoming PlayStation 5 title could somehow revisit the Greek mythology era of the franchise.

However, Sony Santa Monica has not confirmed that the scene actually takes place in Ancient Greece.

Kratos and Laufey Appear Together

The screenshot, released as part of the latest God of War: Laufey promotional material, shows Faye and Kratos together in an elaborate location filled with large stone structures and golden elements.

While the image clearly establishes that Kratos has a presence in the game, it doesn’t explain exactly when or where the encounter occurs.

That distinction is particularly important because Laufey is primarily centered on Faye’s journey after her death.

Sony Santa Monica previously revealed that Faye awakens in the Everywhen, an afterlife for gods from different mythologies. Her journey will take her through this mysterious realm while she attempts to protect Kratos and Atreus.

Is God of War: Laufey Returning to Ancient Greece?

The biggest talking point surrounding the screenshot is its setting.

The columns, architecture and overall visual design resemble locations associated with the Greek era of God of War. Kratos originally became the God of War after his brutal journey through Greek mythology, with the original trilogy heavily featuring locations inspired by Ancient Greece.

But the screenshot alone doesn’t prove that Faye and Kratos have literally returned to Greece.

The Everywhen provides another possible explanation. Since the game is set within an afterlife populated by gods and beings from different mythologies, the location could potentially be a Greek-inspired area within that realm.

Another possibility is that the sequence represents a memory, vision or some other unusual encounter rather than a conventional trip through time.

For now, Sony has not explained the exact nature of the scene.

Why Kratos’ Appearance Matters

Faye is the playable protagonist of God of War: Laufey, marking a major change for the franchise. PlayStation describes the game as a single-player, story-driven action-adventure centered on Faye’s journey through the Everywhen.

Kratos’ appearance therefore raises an obvious question: How important will he be to Faye’s story?

Earlier footage had already shown Kratos during the opening portion of the game, including the events surrounding Faye’s funeral. The latest image suggests that his connection to the game may extend beyond the material shown during the initial reveal.

It still doesn’t confirm that Kratos will be playable, nor does it establish that he will accompany Faye throughout the adventure.

The Everywhen Could Change Everything

The concept of the Everywhen gives Santa Monica Studio considerable freedom with the game’s mythology.

Instead of being restricted to one established pantheon, Faye’s adventure can potentially introduce gods, creatures and locations connected to different mythological traditions.

The official announcement specifically describes the Everywhen as an afterlife where gods from across mythology compete for power.

That makes the Greek-looking environment particularly intriguing. If it is genuinely part of the Everywhen, players could potentially see the franchise’s Greek mythology return without undoing the established chronology of Kratos’ story.

At this stage, though, that remains a possibility rather than confirmed story information.

God of War: Laufey Release Date

God of War: Laufey is officially scheduled to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027. Sony has also opened pre-orders and released additional screenshots and gameplay information showcasing Faye’s combat abilities.

The game will introduce Faye as a new playable protagonist while retaining the cinematic storytelling and brutal combat associated with the modern God of War series.
